Fond du Lac Safe Routes to School Program

INTRODUCTION

The Fond du Lac Area School District serves approximately 7,600 students. The Fond du Lac School District covers approximately 75 square miles and is located in Fond du Lac County. The district operates 14 school buildings, including 9 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, a high school and an alternative high school for at-risk students. A four-year-old kindergarten program entitled Early Learning in Fond du Lac (ELF) was established in the 2005-06 school year operating at 5 of our elementary schools, 10 sites at child care centers within the Fond du Lac community, and 3 sites at child care centers in North Fond du Lac.

The Fond du Lac Area Safe Kid Zone Committee was formed in 2005 after a student was struck by a vehicle riding home from school. The mission of the Safe Kid Zone program is to educate students, parents and the community regarding safety issues addressing bicyclists and pedestrians. The Safe Kid Zone Committee has done parking and traffic assessments annually, developed a parent pledge program, developed public service announcements and raised awareness of bicycle and pedestrian safety issues. The Fond du Lac Area School District has also participated in Walk to School Day and Bike to School Day.
