Forestry
In January 2006, East Central Wisconsin Regional
Planning Commission in partnership with Glacierland Resource Conservation
and Development, Inc. (RC&D), was awarded the two-year $80,000 WDNR Wood
Industry and Timber Utilization Assistance Program Grant to focus on
promoting sustainable forestry in Wisconsin and within the region. The
projects funded by this award will heighten awareness of a
locally-available renewable natural resource and its potential with
regional economic development. Forests cover over 16 million acres or
nearly 46% of Wisconsin’s land area, and we have been GAINING forest
acreage (Wisconsin Forestry.org, March 28, 2006)!
Taking a survey of all regional forest-related
industries, mapping these locations, studying the unique transportation
needs of this industry, developing industry networks and offer instruction
in safety and lean manufacturing through workshops and conferences,
increasing interest in wood-related industry careers through WoodLINKS
Wisconsin, Inc. technical education programs in high schools and technical
colleges, and explore the opportunities biomass energy may present – are
all goals of this program.
